As some businesses slowly begin to shift out of COVID-19 operational status and move toward reopening, there are many factors to consider. There isn’t a one size fits all approach, and companies and staff alike need to allow for increased flexibility. It is vital for companies to consider not only what is most beneficial to their bottom line but also how to work with individual staffers and prospective staffers to meet their needs and set everyone up for a successful next phase.
Individual cities and states vary considerably when it comes to their reopening timelines. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a useful resource for staying on top of the timelines that apply to businesses, especially those that have offices or locations across multiple states.
The contingent workforce is incredibly important to organizations because what the future holds is unknown. Businesses may need to consider a higher split of contingent staffers versus full-time employees in case the economy slows down further or there is a second wave of the pandemic.
Organizations and their staffing agency partners need to be mindful of the CDC guidelines and prepared to incorporate safe hiring practices, from fingerprinting and background checks to interview protocols.
Businesses need to keep in mind how they will be able to virtually set people up for training once hired in order to get them up to speed quickly, as going into the office or meeting live may not be a reality as of yet. They also need to determine how to provide equipment for new hires or if they already have the essentials such as a phone, internet access, laptops, and other necessary equipment to do their jobs.
Are there enough candidates in the talent pool for the particular positions businesses want to hire for that are readily available to work? What does the workforce look like based on those who are willing and able to work? Some may not be able to or want to do so, given the current climate and their individual situations.
