Great Ways to Kick Off the New Year with Your Team

Each new year is an opportunity. It signals a fresh start, allowing you to consider what the future may hold, dedicate yourself to specific changes, and take steps that will help you achieve your goals.

If you are leading a team, there are activities you can do together to ensure you get 2020 started on the right foot. With that in mind, here are some great ways to kick off the new year with your team.

Create a Team Vision Board

Vision boards serve as a tangible representation of your objectives. By brainstorming with your team to identify shared goals and creating one together, you can develop a sense of ownership among the group. Plus, a vision board can be a source of motivation when times get challenging.

After choosing monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals, lay out a plan on the vision board. Identify action steps that take your team from where they are today to where they want to go. That way, you’ll have a roadmap for success in 2020.

Have a Tidying Up Day

When the new year arrives, consider setting aside a day (or half-day) for getting organized. Encourage your team to clean up their email inboxes, file and archive documents, and tidy up their workspaces. Bring supplies for dusting or wiping down desks, phones, or other areas that aren’t cleaned regularly. Make sure that anything that isn’t needed to thrown out or put away properly.

By spending a day tidying up, you can refresh your workspaces. That way, everyone can start off the year fully organized.

See If You Need to Restock

As you tidy up, you’ll likely notice some items are in short supply, missing, or broken. If your team doesn’t have all of the tools or supplies they need, now is the perfect time to get any restocking that needs to be done handled. Then, everyone can get access to items they require as soon as possible.

Make Time for In-Person Meetings

Spending time with your team in-person is better for facilitating strong connections than communicating digitally. If you want to make sure your working relationships are strong, schedule face-to-face meetings now.

This can include stand-up team meetings, one-on-one feedback or touching base sessions, or anything else that allows you to craft relationships. That way, they are on the schedule from the beginning, and you don’t have to worry about squeezing them in down the road.

Talk to Your Team Members About Their Professional Goals

If you didn’t have a year-end review with your employees, the beginning of the year is a great time to talk to each of your team members about their professional goals. By having a one-on-one sit-down, you can find out where they’d like to take their career and come up with a plan that helps them achieve their objectives.

Since professional development opportunities are valued by many professionals, this is a great way to boost morale. Plus, it can help you plan your training budget and promote growth, ensuring 2020 is everyone’s best year to date.
