It’s imperative that once a new hire has accepted their position, the freshly hired talent is set up for success directly upon hire so they feel like a valuable, integrated part of the team and can hit the ground running as quickly as possible. Starting them off on the right foot ultimately helps with retention, causing a decrease in unnecessary spending on recruiting new talent.
Here are eight ways to successfully and quickly onboard new hires:
-
When possible and not a security concern, send employees or contractors their computers, phones, and other technology devices prior to their start date if they are working remotely. If they are working in the office, have everything set up prior to the first day so time isn’t wasted the first morning.
- Schedule an IT training and technology review on the first day in order to walk them through the various programs and tech assets, ensure they have all necessary passwords and access and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
- Have their direct report work with Human Resources to compile a training schedule that can ideally be emailed to the new hire in advance of their start date. That way, they will know their schedule for the first week prior to entering their new role.
- Partner the new hire with a peer who will serve as their go-to for any questions. No one wants the feeling of being the new person and not knowing who to turn to, so this will alleviate that issue and give them comfort in knowing they have a dedicated resource as they get up-to-speed.
- Put time on the new hire’s schedule to meet with the leaders of the other internal teams they will be working with on a consistent basis. Having a clear understanding of how and when they will work with cross-functional teams will help mitigate any confusion.
- Schedule a check-in meeting with the new hire’s direct report at the end of the first day, at the end of the first week, at the end of the first month, etc. This should be positioned as wanting to hear how they are doing, any questions their peers might not have been able to answer, any new ideas they would like to brainstorm, additional training requests, etc. as opposed to being a more formal process.
- Employee morale is paramount to success and helping new team members feel like part of the team is a significant part of it. Schedule a lunch away from the office with their direct team on the first day if possible so there is time to get to know each other.
- If several new hires are starting at the same time, schedule group training when possible so they feel like they are getting to know others and are on the same level having started at a similar time. This will also give them the opportunity to ask questions amongst each other and get to know each other’s roles.
We hope the above tips set you up for retaining top talent and helping make them feel like part of the team from day one. Should you have any hiring needs or additional questions on ways to successfully onboard new team members, please contact the TRC Staffing Services team today.
